| What we do Be it by a publisher, a writing group instructor, or just a friend who heard from a friend, you've probably been told to get an agent. But why? What exactly does a literary agent do? Our job is much more than simply finding a publisher for your book. A good agent can be as much a career manager as anything else, and works for both your short-term goal of finding a good home for your current project and your long-term future as a writer. We draw upon our knowledge of industry trends, various publishing houses’ strengths and weaknesses in publishing certain genres and specific editors’ needs and wants to place a project with the best publisher and editor for you as possible. We may provide editorial guidance and input to help create the strongest and most attractive proposal or manuscript possible prior to submission to publishers. We use our expansive knowledge of book contracts to comb through every detail of a proposed contract, obtaining the very best possible deal for our clients. This could mean better percentages on sub-rights such as audio or electronic sales or a shorter duration of a publisher’s rights over a client’s work.. When a project is placed, we facilitate and maintain active communication between editor and client, listening carefully to client concerns, answering any questions about any aspect of the publishing process and ensuring that the process of manuscript publication goes as smoothly as possible.. When monies are due on signing of a contract or when a book is published, we ensure these monies are received from the publisher on time as promised and dispersed as quickly as possible. We maintain accurate books on all monies due and paid to our clients, relaying any relevant royalty statements and the like furnished by the publisher. We work with overseas co-agents to help place our client's books with overseas publishers, attempting to maximize author visibility and sales around the globe. We work with many other types of sub-agents such as film and television agents to explore potential deals in these areas. We provide suggestions for clients on future book topics, offer advice on existing ones and encourage frank discussion on the merits and drawbacks of any future project subjects. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are some links for author resources found on the Web: The Literary Marketplace The Association of Author's Representatives (AAR) The Author's Guild |
